Fish need "sleep". They are used to a natural cycle of light and dark just like we are. Even though they don't technically curl up in bed and go to sleep, their metabolic rate slows down and their bodies will rest at night. If they don't get this down time, they tend to be more stressed, and a stressed out fish is extremely susceptible to disease. They need the regular cycle of light and dark just as they would in the natural habitat of ponds, rivers and oceans. Also, it helps to keep algae in check.

As previously stated you shodulvn't leave the lights no for no more than 8 horus a day to rpevent algae growth. The best thing to do is to buy a cheap timer from your local pet store or wlamrt that ou can have to turn the aquarium lights no and off while your sleeping, not home or any other time and it will save you the work of remembering.

Some fish do like to have a good period of darkness and aren't big fans of having the light on all the time, usually bottom feeders, but the main reason for turning your aquarium light off at night is to prevent algae growth. Most people suggest you only keep the aquarium light on 8 hours a day in order to prevent algae.

I have tropical fish and goldfish. i do always turn the lights off at night. i have had my fish a long time. i have 3 tanks. if you notice at night they will go to the bottom of the tank to sleep. you only need the light on to view. if not viewing you can turn off light. ask the pet store where you buy your fish if that type of fish need heat. if so buy a heater. the light is not for heat. good luck with your fish. they are actually very easy to take care of. also remember to buy a algae eater.

You should allow your tank and fish some "down" time. They say 16 hours of light and 8 hours of night. Also, leaving the tank light on all the time produces more algae.

Yes. Fish sleep. Otherwise turn off the lights to save energy, keep temperature down, reduce evaporation, and facilitate the Krebs cycle of any photosynthesizers in your tank.

I always turn the tank light off, otherwise it does get really hot in there. They don't need constant light, leave them in the dark for a while. Just leave the pump/filter on, if the tank has one

Yes, fish need darkness. In a natural environment they would have darkness at a certain point in the day. To create a habitat that is suitable creating darkness for the fish will help.
