Just wondering what people who have seen the film think. I laughed out loud in places, cringed mightily through most of it, and what was noticeable to me, that the whole theatre tutted and hushed in a shocked way when he made two racist remarks at the beginning of the film - in character, and we know it is a joke on us - apparently - but it was uncomfortable - I think it great that we have come so far that the natural reaction to these sorts of comments is shock and horror - but are there some people who won't get the "joke"? What the heck does the rodeo scene say about midwestern america? And the dinner party people who were willing to accept Borat and his lack of toilet training - but not his bringing in a lower class hooker! I'm 50/50 on the whole thing - clever, but did it work in its entirety?

Honestly, it didn't live up to my expectations. It wasn't that funny.
Here's the thing though- some of it was SO offensive (for instance, all the Jew bashing) that you knew it wasn't REALLY making fun of Jews.
The rodeo scene was a little foggier. Was it staged? Did it just happen? Either way, it did have an element of truth- and don't blow up on me for saying so- and I think that maybe what it says about midwestern America is something that needed to be said anyway.
What's funny to me is the difference between your experience and mine. In my theater, people were cracking up throughout the whole thing. As to the hooker- I was honestly more pissed off at the people Borat was eating with for being such pricks to her than I was at Borat for bringing her. To be shocked or offended by that never even occured to me.
It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, and I don't dislike it because of it's offensiveness or shock humor, I just didn't think a lot of it was all that clever. The concept is good, but the execution could be improved.

It is both. It draws a fine line between being funny and racist. I think overall the thing that saves it is that Cohen (the actor who plays Borat) wrestles that naked fat man... I think that someone who does that can't be taken seriously no matter how insulted you think you ought to feel.
Overall I would say it was a very good film which I did laugh out loud several times while watching... but I still felt slightly soiled by watching it.

I think what the film is basically saying is that we need to stop being so uptight all the time, and just let go. Political correctness has made you tut and gasp at what he is saying, but you're meant to laugh. Just laugh.
And some of it was just meant to be there for comedy value. He should come to England and do that, he'd feel right at home. We are so bloody uptight about who we offend that we're afraid to even ship off some cleric back to where he came from after being RACIST about our own country. Come to England, Borat.

Neither.
Most people know it's a joke and don't think Kazahkstan is really like that. Comedy often pushes boundaries and I think that's something to preserve. However, I just don't get Sacha Baron Cohen's brand of comedy.

PC is so overrated that it is refreshing to see someone come by and throw it out the window for the sake of comedy. Mel Brooks doesn't know the meaning of the phrase, and god bless him. Learn to laugh!

I found it funny, although not as funny as I expected it to be. I doubt anyone who is offended by stuff like this would bother to go and see it, Im sure they know what to expect from him and even if they didn't its had that much media attention they will by now anyway!

I thought the movie was boring. I saw it yesterday and I like his skits on the Ali G show much better. I was wondering why he didn't make fun of Muslims. Certainly that is politically incorrect. I think its because he and the studio are chickenshit. Its easier to make fun of Jews, Christians and retards.
