How can you tell if someone has mercury poisoning?

a professor dropped a mercury filled thermometer. I helped him pick it up and put it in a pyrex beaker. How much contact with mercury is too much? What kinds of effects can mercury have on a person's physiology?

The mad hatter was mad because in the olden days mercury compounds were used to block hats.
Don't worry your brief contact with liquid mercury is no cause for concern. Trust me and relax.
