I'm an optometrist and I plan to buy a practice and I need to locate an attorney that deals with contracts and buy/sell agreements. Where would I start to look for such an attorney?

You're looking for a business lawyer, but you may not find anybody specializing in that area if your area is not a big urban center.

Any competent attorney in general practice will be able to help you, but you should try to find a lawyer who has some experience in buying a selling a professional, especially medically related, business, and that won't be as easy.

If there are optometrists who won't be competing with you in surrounding towns or cities, call them and ask who they used.

Go online to the web site for your state's Bar Association. There are several search fields there to help you locate an attorney in a specific field. You can also look in your phone book, under attorneys. There should be a phone listing for "Attorney Referral Service". When you call them, they will ask you a few questions, and give you the names and phone numbers for a few attorneys in your area that practice the type of law you specifically need. This service is free. The only criteria is that the attorneys they refer you to have to be a member in good standing with the Bar Association. It is still up to you to research and/or interview the individual attorneys to see which one (if any) meet your specific needs. The referral makes no opinion as to the attorney's competence. Call all of them and start by going to the ones that offer a free "interview". Avoid the ones that charge for this initial mini-meeting.
