We just had the problem, and at first we thought they were the common Fruit Fly, but they are actually Gnats. They come from all kinds of places in the home like garbage disposals, holes in screens, bathrrom vents. They especially like to come in when it is cold outside. Most people would recommend using vinegar to get rid of them, but this leaves a nasty smell. What helped for us is sprinkling baking soda and water together, then pouring it down any drains in your house. Make sure your screens on your windows are in good shape. They are attracted to any food left out, so try and not leave food out. Lighting a scented candle really annoys them too.
We also used to have pet birds- Cockateils to be exact. Their food is 'dusty' and those little annoying flies love that. Try and give your birds only the amount of food they need in one day, so that there isnt extra food. And as hard as it is, try and keep their cage and surrounding area clean. (I know, those birds love to flick their food everywhere). Another thing you can try is lighting a scented candle near the bird cage, but not close enouhg to bother the birds. Or you can try buying some spray for the birds. You spray it on the birds feathers and its supposed to keep bugs away. We found this useful and it was at the local pet store for pretty cheap.

You have Phorid flies. I have them too and yes, they are so freaking annoying. I came here looking for answers to help get rid of them once and for all. I cannot even leave a glass of wine uncovered because with seconds a phorid will be in it. Mine disappear when the weather gets cold but are back the minute it warms up. I live in AZ so this is becoming a huge problem.

RE:
Little tiny flies?
I have bunches of these little annoying flying things in my house. They are NOT fruit flies, I know how to deal with them. I do not know where these darn things are coming from and I can't get rid of them. I've tried home remedies, I've sprayed them with fly spray and they are still...

Sounds like either fruit flies or gnats. We had an infestation last winter. We tried everything... the vacuum hose (parked in the kitchen to use everyday), fly swatter, gnat spray, and a bug zapper and a small dish set out of Soy Sauce. Each killed some, but never all. This year we turned on the zapper early and knock on wood, we haven't seen many at all. Try Walmart... they would have them on clearance. We paid $5 each for ours and bought two. Best of luck.

There's a couple that come to mind. If you have birds you could have meal moths. They infest bird food, flour and alot of other things. Another insect is fungus gnats. If you have alot of plants they can live off the fungus that grows in too wet potting soil. The last is a phorid fly that lives in drains. I'm guessing that they are meal moths, but google all these names and you'll find some remedies. Rick.

I know why! they are really small and it is because it is winter. When it is winter flies like to go somewhere warm and wind up coming down your air conditioner. That is what happened to me.
