Does anyone know what time period the book was written in? (As in what time period the characters are in, not when Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote it.)

it was set in the Mid-seventeenth century

Yes, the story is set in the mid-seventeenth century - around the 1640s to be exact - in a purtian town in Massachusetts called Salem.

It seems to be the earliest period in American history, shortly after the landing of the Mayflower, when America was struggling to be a viable Christian community, just as we are now.

this book was based in the 15th century i think...about the time the very first settlers came to america
