I was thinking of an encyclopedia on fish or something like that

Books, they basically says the same thing, if your dad who has been keeping fish for 20 years, he probably read or knows the content most of them can provide.

I personally feel, a magazine subscription for a year would be great ( I wish my kids would ;) ). TFH (Tropical Fish Hobbyist) http://www.tfhmagazine.com/ would be my recommendation, as a fish keeper myself.

I've been keeping fish for years. The National Audubon Society-- "Field Guide To FISHES" is great ! It's a very good book for me. I have found so many fish i never knew existed. But it's not just tropical fish. My wife bought mine at Books a Million. You might want to look at it. I have to refer back to that book all the time. The pictures are at the top of the line! Those people know what their doing. Good Luck

does your dad specialize in any particular variety of fishes?
what are his favorites?
there are many, many books to chose from
some written specially for one breed of fish
