A barium enema is used to illuminate the intestines radiologically, they use it to look for lesions, cuts in the large intestine. and primarily to detect cancer--it can be used to determine if you have diverticulosis (which is pockets that form in the intestine, so it doesn't clean out entirely, very unhealthy) and other diseases. It can show if you have polyps (little growths inside the intestine that can lead to bleeding and cancer), benign growths. Basically they are looking to see if there is something wrong inside your large intestine.

Awful is right. I had a couple of them when I had ulcerative colitis, and they were pretty traumatic. You must have had some bowel problem or they would not have performed this procedure - it is not a routine test.

Good luck with getting over this, both the test and whatever the test reveals.

Yah, I heard that is an awful test. And some funny storys. They were looking for diseases of the colon. I hope your bum feels better :)

Bless your heart. It is exactly like the previous statements. Be sure and take a laxative. That stuff is almost like brick in your bowels.
