:p is a sideways smiley with the tongue hanging out. :D is a big smile showing teeth. For as long as I've chatted online, people have used the :) smiley, it's just a pleasant way to end your sentence. It also can distinguish the difference between a sarcastic remark or a sincere one. (But not always. Hehe.)

They are a smiley sideways with tongue sticking out, a wide open smiley mouth and a smiley trying to lick it's nose.
Yours --- p: look like they were thinking too hard about it and their eyes fell through to their chin.
But that's okay though. Maybe they're for people who tilt their head to the right to check 'em out.
