After the Civil War ended, Southern states passed laws that limited the rights of black Americans. Many of these "Jim Crow Laws" were used to segregate blacks and whites - requiring them to use separate water fountains, schools, restauraunts, buses, etc. Some of the laws prevented blacks from voting, by requiring literacy tests or poll taxes. These were in violation of the 15th Amendment, which guarantees everyone the right to vote, regardless of race or color.

If I remember correctly Jim Crow was a way that some states in the south used to get around the 15th amendment. They made laws that segregated african americans, keeping them in slavery, even though the 15th amendment technically abollished slavery.
