The problem is that we Americans do not really travel to other countries that much. There are some wealthy Americans that do travel and some of them are obnoxious, rude and insulting.

I once witnessed an American tourist in a Russian berioska, a hard currency (money from a country with wealth, such as America or England) shop, trying to short change the clerk. He actually thought that because she could not speak English well that she could not count either. That is how horrible some wealthy tourists can be. Not only could she count, but she waited until he gave her the full amount and many of us in the line had yelled at him.

Also, America has a lot of power and influence over the rest of the world and many people in other countries resent us for that. Our styles and our way of life pervade their lives and bring changes that they may never otherwise have asked for.

While our President does make decisions without our daily input, we did vote for him and the rest of the world knows that. They do hold us all responsible for the type of leader we put in office. Even Hitler was not considered solely responsible for the horror that he created.

Take care,
Troy

You know most of the time people take their prejudice for the reality.
As a french girl I hear sometimes harch stuff about US citizens. Maybe I can help you a bit to find out about the origines of thoses critics.
I tend to think it goes back to the Vietnam war, which has upset many people around the world (and man americans, too..) And before this, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagazaki.
More recently, the decision taken to go on war in irak without the approval of the UN has disapointed many people also, like the refusal to sign the tokyo aggrement.
So some people see the US as a country which take decision regardless the others, and who abuse of it's hegemonic status.
I know also that some people are upset by the fact that the US is still practicing the death penalty, which they consider as barbare.
But of course this is very far from a thorough insight of the United States, and not neutral at all. It doesn't refect the diversity in public opinion, too.

you're not overly liked down under either mate, not only because of your government, but because the majority of Americans that actually get out and see the world are arrogant, rude and self righteous...so the opinion is usually based on the ones we see as well as your governments world policing tactics.

scrouge is a perfect example, do you people know anything about the freedoms in any other country? FFS! and do you really believe the HUGE stunning country of Oz with only 20 million people would be jealous of the over populated, poluted, murderous states?

America's leadership is drawn from luring the brilliant people from other countries to contribute to leadership in technology. In other words, if America were not welcoming of diversity - say, for example, we called Einstein a dirty kraut and kicked him out of the country before the Manhattan project was even started - the US would not be the world leader that it is today.

Meanwhile, most mainstream Americans have long experienced a dumbed down school curriculum thanks to caving in to whining parents and kids and weak-kneed administrations. The result is a majority dumb and selfish populace that rarely amounts to anything worth knowing. These fools then go out and make a bad name for the rest of us when they vacation outside of the US. Stupid, fat, selfish, and insulting are all things that nobody really likes much.

There are others, however, like myself, that make numerous foreign friends both in and outside of the US as a result of our willingness to listen, care about others, and generally be friendly and kind. For some strange reason, these "others" like people that behave this way. Ironically, the jackass that tries to (in fool's own words) "jew" people all the time, find out that their efforts garner hatred, even if they do manage to swindle some people along the way.

To sum things up frankly: there are many Americans that deserve a sound beating.

In particular, there is an abusive rich populace in the US that deserves to be lynched. They have slaves abroad, kidnap or buy children as sex slaves, swindle, steal, import and sell illegal drugs, and generally treat others as inferior species (let alone human). Such vile behavior ought to be extinguished in the most severe way possible.

America is seen as the rebellious teenager of contries. Here we have these countries, thousands of years old, set in their ways, and here comes America, two hundred plus years old, doing the equivalent of flipping the other countries off by saying we are better than they are.

Not only that, they may be jealous of the things that we are able to do, like voice our opinions about the government (except for advocating killing the president and such), freedom of religion and the press, and other stuff that the other countries wouldn't dream of doing.

But also, here's something that even americans do concerning other countries; blame the whole population for something one person or a few people do.

And don't forget, not all of us are descendants of Europeans.

It's the conservative americans, as opposed to the liberals. The republicans are a bunch of backward looking bible bashing facists masquerading as a political party. They're such hipocrites!

And we get sick of hearing 'we saved ur a$s in WW2'

To the idiot that just answered religious and dumb. Your a moron.

Our country has taken some bad turns especially recently with G.W. as president and this has not helped. We are seen as bullies who try to force our beliefs on other people. The other guy who pointed out that we cant be responsible for what our government does is not totally correct as we are the people who have elected him. Although it is really hard to impeach.

Americans are so open to new things and doing things outside the box, we have to realize that other countries do not necessarily think as we do. In other words its like this, if your a liar you tend to think other people are liars, if your a cheat you tend to think other people are cheats. Europeans and others think a certain way and can believe that everyone thinks the same way. I am trying to say in a nice way, their all uptight rude ***.es and do not get our ways.

As you sow, so shall you reap. It's a little more than surface politics. To keep you hear they tell them to light a fire under you. I personally don't trust government anywhere. At this point, for those who accede to such a creature, they resemble a little too closely the hands and feet of a devil's kingdom here on earth.

I think America's OK, people from England should really stop calling the pot black, when the kettle's black. If you know what I mean. England is a bloody awful place to live. At least in America you have choices!!!!
