GPS is a permanent satellite signal that is beamed from all over the world from dzens of satellites. Think of it as a beep-beep-beep. The receiver has a sophisticated antenna and processor that determines the angle and position of at least three satellites and can calculate the position and altitude of you from the angles. Cool, isn;t it? Accurate to about 5-10 meters (30 feet or so) for non military use.

Best yet...GPS costs NOTHING! except the cost of the receiver...just like buyng an AM/FM radio
