This has to do with the taxes being withheld on your payroll check. You are asking about your W4, correct?

If you are married, but they are withholding taxes from your payroll check as if you were single, check the single box.

If you are married and you are withholding taxes from your payroll check as married, check the married box.

You can choose to withhold taxes at the single rate even if you are married. This usually means that whoever cuts your payroll check withholds MORE money than at the married rate.

People normally do this when they know that they are going to have a large tax bill at the end of the year. By withholding at the single rate they will pay more in now and owe less at tax time.

You can choose Single Married Married but withhold at the higher single rate The latter means that you're claiming being married, but asking to have the government withhold at the higher rate. Single rate is higher than married, but you can opt to have them withhold at that rate despite claiming to be married.

It sounds like your tax status. You can claim single 1 or 0 or since you are married, you can claim married 1 or 0. If your spouse is claiming themselves - don't claim them. It just tells your boss how much to deduct from your paycheck.

it just means they take more taxes out of your check, and you could get it back when you do your taxes at tax time.
