are there certain items that should not be burned...such as diapers...? also, is it terribly harmful to the environment? since i've never done this before, i could use any tips/advice on how to best go about doing this.

Why should they not be burned ? Provided the fire is hot emough they should be OK - just don't get downwind.

Don't burn wet stuff or tyres - that is really bad news.

Make an incinerator by punching holes in an old oil drum, and burn your rubbush in that.

I usually try to burn things with no plastics in them - a small amount won't hurt, but try to limit the quantity. Glass and other recyclible items should not be burned in the fire for the sake of safety. It is best to put a piece of "hail screen" over the burn barrel to prevent large pieces of charred paper from floating free. I don't believe that it is harmful if done with some reason. Some states don't allow this so make sure that you don't get into any trouble there. Personally, I think it is a better alternative than hauling to a landfill.

I lived in the country for years and burned my trash in a big metal container. I burned all items that could be devoured by fire with the exception of rubber auto tires.

fire pit should be well contained,use a 55gallon steel barrow, knock some holes in the sides of it,for air flow.burn nothing toxic ie;diapers,arosol can's,styofoam,plastic, you understand what i say n now?
