Just a few observations for you:
1. The most potent poisons in the world are perfectly natural. Amanita mushrooms are thousands of times more toxic than any synthetic drug.
2. Most types of drugs used in western medicine are derived from plants including aspirin, atropin, paclitaxel and many many others.
3. Tobacco is a perfectly natural product. It is responsible from a third of all cancer deaths. Tobacco kills millions around the world every year.
4. Rural India where they have traditional medicine only, has one of the worst infant-mortality rates in the world and life expectancy is almost 20 years shorter than it is in urban centers, where they have western medicine.
5. Almost every weed stores toxic chemicals as a defense against herbivores and insects.
6. A child with leukemia had zero chance of survival in 1940, no matter which traditional remedy was tried. Today, with Western chemotherapy, he has a 80 % chance to survive.
7. No traditional or alternative practice offers vaccines. You take your "Western" vaccines as granted and you probably have no idea what a huge difference they make for children. Gotta see African children suffering from all sorts of diseases eradicated by vaccination in the West. (African tribes DO have traditional healers)
8. F*** doctors they make way too much money!

I have to agree with linsey on this one. Western medicine is usually more concerned with treating symptoms that have already developed, and while I do give it credit for being able to help sustain people who have gotten to that point, a lot of alternative medicine is about overall (physical, emotional, spiritual) health and PREVENTION, which is much better in the long run. Many people have also combined both conventional and alternative practices into their health care with great results. Just make sure that whoever you end up going to is licensed and certified. Here's to your health. :)

Concider this....
Many times when you go to the doctor they perscribe medicine that will treat the aches and pains. for example if you go in with a bloody nose they might give you something to help clott the blood- if you go in with nausea and vomiting they treat the nausea and vomiting.
Alternative medicine is more concerned with the underlying cause. Often times you get sick because of the toxins in your body, or your immune system is down or unable to work effectively. Alternative medicine works to achieve "over all" health rather than just adhering to your aches and pains.
Kind of an all around preventative approach rather than treatment after you are ill.
There are medical clinics in Europe and other parts of the world who have Alternitive means to healing diabetes, leukemia, cancers.... etc. that the government in the US has outlawed because it interferse with Western Medicine.
Personally- I would deffinately do everything in my power to treat myself with Alternative medicine and go for the "over all" health then just treating my aches and pains and helping the rest of my body stay healthy as well and PREVENTING having to need a doctor.

What do you mean when you say Some Alternative? I'm a founding member of a group of alternative healers. In our group we have, acupuncture, body workers, chiropractic, energy healing, feng shui, homeopathy, kinesiology, massage, meditation, naturopathy, nutritionist, reiki, sound therapy, yoga and more. All these people have one thing in common. They look for the cause of the physical manifestation and a cure. Most of them use preventative methods for keeping us in good health. For the most part these methods don't involve cutting a body open and then sewing it back up. They don't use medicine's that cause more problems then they solve. We encourage traditional medical practitioners to join our group to help them become aware of the more harmonious methods of healing. We have one doctor who uses knowledge from the traditional and alternative modalities. She is more interested in educating her patients then giving them pills.

I think alternative medicine is being disregarded too much. There must be good medicines out there in the natural world. At the same time, it shouldn't be given too much credit. Double blind tests are always importnant.

western medicine cures many things that the ancients couldn't.
leprosy, small pox, tb....
for day to day living traditional medicine is hard to beat. when your md starts feeding you the AMA crap, just remember that the AMA is funded more by pharmacutical companies than drs dues.
the ancient peruvians were doing sccessful brain surgery. the native americans could cure almost every malady they had until the white man came.
both have their place. remember too that 50% of all drs graduated in the botom half of their class.
