as you open the door, you are confronted by a child, around 4-6 years old, with their hair in a mess, tears running down their face, wearing ripped clothes, bruises and marks on their face, arms, looking dishevelled, worried and having slightly distressed look on their face. in other words, resembling an orphan from the third world. what would you do in a situation like this? would you call social services and the police, invite the child in your home and take care of him/her until he/she is well or get someone else to look after them?

by the way, i want serious answers only please

in response to AWOL, yes i understand what you mean. seeing as you don't want to do anything to them that gives them the impression that you're a child molester of some sort. so yes, i agree its a very difficult predicament indeed

In most places in Ireland you could look after the wee'un, take it by the hand, look for parents in the vicinity and if none obvious bring it into the house, warm it up and give it a warm drink whilke you phonbed the Gardai. In the England I know you would definitely be reported and probably arrested. Even in the good ole USA they would not do that [I think?]

OK so it's a strange question but for some reason I feel compelled to answer.........I am wondering why the child has only a 'slightly' distressed look though. Anyway, I would call Social Services and the police immediately. Obviously I would look after the child until they arrived. I would also enquire as to the outcome of the case in the days that followed. Hope that helps and hope that this hasn't happened to you.

That's a really difficult question to answer. I would want to take the child into my home, comfort them, get them cleaned up and fed, all the things my instincts tell me the child needs - but in this day and age, the chances are I'd be in a lot of trouble for just touching them, who knows what accusations might be brought up, so in reality I don't know what I would do. Its a very sad situation, isn't it.

I would invite the child in clean them up give them something to eat and drink, once theyve calmed down ask what happened then depending on their answer go from there, most likely inform the authorities. and figure out the best result for the child

I would first talk to the child . If he /she is 4-6 years they can tell you why they are crying , and then go from there .

Thats a hard one to answer, on one hand you would want to help, but on the other it could have serious implications and you have to be really careful these days as far as children are concerned!!
