There are two types of solder aids out there. Some solders use an acid core to help etch the material being soldered. The flux used in plumbing to affix (usually copper) fittings to each other is a caustic substance that cleans the mating surfaces and acts as a wetting agent to promote flow of the solder into the joint being made. The substance is usually a paste applied with a brush, and has lye as its primary ingredient.

Plumbing flux is a chemical compound, essentially a combination of a mild acid and Vaseline, applied to eliminate the traces of oxidation from the segments of the copper pipe to be connected to each other, after the pieces were wire brushed and wiped.
