The following are some of the differences between whales and sharks:
Whales are mammals... they are warm-blooded. They breath air thru their lungs. Sharks are fish... cold-blooded animals and process oxygen thru their gills.
Whales give live birth. Depending on the species, sharks give birth to live babies, called pups, or lay eggs in tough protective egg cases.
Whales eat plankton while sharks feed on plankton, other fish and the occasional human.
Whale skin is smooth and glossy while sharks have scaley skin.
... By the way, if you ever have the chance to feel shark skin, if you move your hand from the front of the shark to the back, the skin is prickly. If if move your hand from the back towards the front, it feels smoother. My Zoology class in college had a baby shark (dead) for teaching purposes.
Whales move their horizontal tail fins (called the fluke) up and down while sharks move their vertical fins side to side, like regular fish.

A whale is, according to the dictionary:
"Any of various marine mammals of the order Cetacea, having the general shape of a fish with forelimbs modified to form flippers, a tail with horizontal flukes, and one or two blowholes for breathing, especially one of the very large species as distinguished from the smaller dolphins and porpoises."
A shark is:
"Any of numerous chiefly marine carnivorous fishes of the class Chondrichthyes (subclass Elasmobranchii), which are sometimes large and voracious and have a streamlined torpedolike body, five to seven gill openings on each side of the head, a large oil-filled liver, a cartilaginous skeleton, and tough skin covered with small toothlike scales."
********************************************************************
Most sharks do not have bones like whales do, they have cartilage like what makes up a persons nose. Whales have a blowhole and sharks have gills. A whales moves its tail up and down to propel them and sharks wag their tail side to side to propel them. The whale tail flukes are horizontal and shark tails are more vertical. Whales are mammals and sharks are fish so the differences of mammals and fish apply here as well. Whales give live birth with nourishment for the baby inside the mother provided by the mothers body whereas a large number of sharks the babies inside the mother are nourished by the egg that they are in and not the mother's body like through an umbilical chord. However sharks employ a wider variety of reproductive strategies of being oviparous or viviparous or ovoviviparous. Also the skin is different as can be seen by the quote from the dictionary. Shark skin is small teeth, whale skin is is not.

A whale is a mammal who needs air to breath. Sharks aren't mammals, and they have gills that lets them breath water. A whale's tail is horizontal, and goes up and down, and the shark's tail is vertical, and goes side to side. There are many other differences to, but i don't feel like listing them all.
