Back when some of these programs started 30 years ago, the primary sponsors were "Soap" companies because they knew the majority of the audience were women who stayed home and took care of the house and laundry. The opera part has to do with the "drama."

I think the opera part refers to the amount of drama involved. I know the soap part is because of the commercials for cleaning products that used to be run during (and featured in) the shows.

Opera= Dramatic.
Most Opreras that you go to where the supranos perform are dramatic, and soap operas are dramatic...it's just another word for dramatic.

Wikipedia instructed me - The identify Soap opera refers to their origins as radio publicizes where quite a lot of cleaning soap brands corresponding to Procter and Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Pepsodent have been the exhibit's sponsors.
