Nightmare On Elmstreet movies are really good...especially on a late night when you live out in the country where there is absolutely nobody around and you all of a sudden hear a friggin' cat scratch on the front of you door.

maybe Blair Witch (1) and Sixth Sense
neither is your standard horror/slasher thriller, they're more cerebral.
Certain scenes of "Signs" are my favorite.
"War Of the Worlds" had some really good spots too.
As a kid I remember being freaked out by 70s movies "Prophecy" and "It's Alive" though seeing these again lately (in parts) I think, what was the big deal. But they're obsure retro ones if you like that.

The Hellraiser movies and The Exorcist... I totally dislike Regan (Linda Blair). Her face and voice creep me out... I've never watched the whole movie. It gives me nightmares...
Edit to add:
Charles' answer reminded me of another one...
It's one of the movies that the Tales From The Crypt series produced. It is called "Demon Night" with Billy Zane and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Tales from the Hood was pretty scary, too...

Audition (Japanese horror) - after watching it, I feel asleep on the couch with my fiance. My roommates came home and I started screaming when the door opened as I obviously had been awoken from a terrifying movie induced nightmare.

The Grudge - but watch the Japanese version and not the American one. The Japanese version has a more complicated story line but is much scarier. The American version only made me jump but the Japanese version had me hidden under a blanket the whole time.
