The names "Asia" and "Europe" come to us from the Greeks. The former means "land of the rising sun" and the latter "land of the setting sun."

North and South America are named after Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer. His name was first associated with the Americas by a mapmaker named Martin Waldseemueller, who published a map of the recently discovered continent(s) in 1507.

The name "Africa" comes to us from the Romans, who named the land mass after a tribe, the Afri, who lived along the northern coast. The "ca" in the name means "land of," so "Africa" means "land of the Afri."

The name "Australia" also comes from the Romans. It was a common belief among ancient peoples that there must be an unknown continent in the south, but it was the Roman (Latin) name the stuck, "terra australis incognita," or "unknown southern land." Apparently the first use of the shorter "Australia" was in a 1692 French novel by Gabriel de Foigny, but the name did not become popular until an 1814 book by the British navigator Matthew Flinders. In 1824 the British Admiralty officially adopted the name.

Finally, the name "Antarctica" again comes from the Greek, and means simply "opposite the Arctic." I know, now you want to know where "Arctic" comes from, right? Well, it also comes from the Greek, from the word for "bear," a reference to the constellations of Ursa Majoris (the Great Bear) and Ursa Minoris (the Little Bear), more commonly known as the Big and Little Dippers.
