It comes from the gutters on my house. The sistern is bell shaped masonary construction with a steel lid. The water looks delicious.
I try to make sure no dead (feathered) animals wind up there.

Ignore these germophobes. 1 drop of bleach per gallon of water will kill bacteria, however, chemicals in the air are still a problem. Filtering it thru something like a Brita water filter is your best bet.

If the cistern is clean and the area where you live has clean air ( like you don't live next to an industrial park or anything) then it should be okay. But to be on the safe side you might want to boil the water and then drink it. That's what I do when I wash my hair with rain water.

Think of how poluted the air is. Industrial smoke, acid rain , etc. While it may look good it is better to go with treated water. We have a cistern too & have the water trucked in. I feel better about that.

Do you really think that the gutters of your house are a sanitary means of transporting water? You are taking your chances, but that being said it was done for thousands of years. Try it once to get it out of your system; I'll bet its not nearly as yummy as it looks.

Up to about 60 years ago lots of people did this.

I am sure in some parts of the world they still do it.

But now there is so much junk in the air it would be best not to.

absolutely not! You ever heard of acid rain? You know birds do crap on your roof and not to mention the dirt and bacteria factor that that damn container has. Save that for the flower bed and get you some tap water if you want to be adventurous!

NO! are you stupid? rain water is some of the dirtiest water ever, and besides, running through your gutters REALLY couldn't help that at all.

you shouldn't drink the water, but you could if you boiled it but if your don't and drink it what if you swallow some kind of larvae and get sick. always if you get water that is standing, boil it before you drink it.
