Fifteen years ago, republicans were great. They were willing to embrace the future, but with an enthusiasm tempered by a value and respect for the good ol' days. I truly honored their beliefs, because it seemed like all they wanted was to make sure a man could become a millionaire on merit, that children were brought up in decent, traditional homes, and that everyone on American soil was a true, integrated patriot.
But then politicians on both sides, desperate for votes, started villainizing the opposing party. Democrats hate God, Republicans hate the working-class, Democrats kill babies, Republicans kill everybody else. So Democrats became more rabidly Democrat, Republicans became more rabidly Republican. The modern incarnation of each side is pretty disgusting. In many people's eyes, Republicans have become a party of war, greed, and almost theocratic loyalty to the words of anyone who seems religiously righteous, and the only thing Democrats have going for them is that they aren't Republicans.
But I do see hope. The next presidential elections will doubtlessly show us a more conservative Democrat and a more liberal Republican, two fairly sane people who may actually want what's best for America. Then maybe we'll be able to pick the most qualified leader for the country, rather than trying to choose between the insane propaganda, trying to decide if invading a third-world country for oil is worse than harvesting baby brains for stem cells.
Of course, there will always be absolute douchebags who are bent on further polarizing the nation and making enemies of their fellow Americans. You ask such a constructive question.

1) You're wrong.
2) Your comments are unsurprising given the intolerant nature of the Democratic party these days.
3) Among those different degrees of Democrats there are those who are ultra liberal and those who are conservative, just as there are liberal and ultra-conservative. Getting rid of a label would do little to change this.
4) Genocide is creepy. You and Hitler would get along famously.

Yeah right, lol. No one group of people can make this country OKAY. Democrats will get in power and bad things will still happen... no one can control that, they just like to blame Bush because hes an easy target. People are entitled to their own beliefs and opinions, democrat or republican.

This country is on a trend, we elect a Democrat, the Right wing Conservatives get very upset. They remove the liberal any way they can and the American people reelect a republican.
It has been proven through out history. The reason is, Democrats are for the people, and the other for them self's. Personally I do not care for motives on either side, look at history.
Republican are Fat cats wanting more money from tax payers.

Not all republicans, though some of the super-conservative ones seem to want to send our country back to the 1800's...

Isn't that just the way?
Conservatives: "You're wrong, but I'll fight for your right to believe.. whatever."
Liberals: "You're wrong and it bothers me and I'm going to litigate until I get what I want."
I suppose the only thing less productive than a democrat is a flame-baiter.
