I took my car in for a smog today (car registration purposes). They took one look at my car and said NO, the check engine light is on.

LONG story short- he told me I need to change my o2 scenser in order to pass smog. Is this true? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I changed my o2 sensor ($68) and then it passed.
Probably need more info on car and the state your in, but it will help either way.

Sometimes it can be as simple as a short in the wire, not seeing it can't offer much, but as others suggest you can have other places read the code and verify. One thing you NEVER let an inspection station do is remove the sticker if you still have time left on it to take it to another garage for a second opinion. The O2 sensor effects the fuel mixture effecting the emissions, this is not going to cool off the sun any and prevent global warming but less pollution is always good.

check engine light is on, it dont mean that your o2 sensoris f*d up, could be your MAP sensor, TPS sensor and whole lot of things. So what kind of car is it? that would help out. the o2 sensor regulates to air fuel mixture correctly sometimes it is a culprit of the check engine light. hit me on tha low u fine.

can't say if that is true unless i know the trouble code. a bad o2 sensor could cause the check engine light to light up though.

This may or may not work! Go to an auto parts store (depending on year) have them reset ur codes (obd or odbII). Drive around afew miles to another inspection station and have them look at it. If the above doesnt work replace the o2 sensor :)

how do they know what it needs if they wont test it? and if you can find someone to clear the code then you can test it. if it is the o2 sensor they are not that expensive for most cars.
