Possibly American brass?

CAPT: Tried that. They don't know. All they can say is that they don't carry them

Just take it to a good home center or better hardware store eg Ace, Central, TrueValue. THEY will identify it for you and for less than a dollar or so sell you what you need and explain it all to you. Keep in mind cold and hot valves are reverse threaded.
