at my first prenatal appointment i had a vaginal exam done. it included the finger in the uterus part of a normal exam. It worries me because I am pregnant and the baby lives in my uterus... also it was rather painful to have her put pressure on my uterus. please tell me?

thanks for all the input... but it raisies a new question: Then why did she ask if it hurts when she put pressure on my uterus... and also, how did she feel my ovaries through my vagina if she didn;t get through my cervix?

Its normal. The vaginal exam doesnt include the docs fingers going in your uterus. They just check your cervix which is where the uterus ends and closes when pregnant. As long as your not dialited which prob wont happen until late in the third trimester, nothing can get in your uterus via the vagina. Thats why itssafe to have sex while pregnant. Take deep breaths and try to relax. Maybe find an object in the room to concentrate on during the exam. Take Care Sweetheart and Congrats!!!!

The exam did not include a finger in your uterus. Your cervix is closed until childbirth. A cervix is the opening to the uterus. The exam allows the Doctor to determine the uterine position. Though it may be uncomfortable it is necessary for the pregnancy. Best wishes.

congrats Mommy! Sorry but that exam was totally normal. It may be uncomfortable for you but babe will be fine and well. The doc didn't actually put her fingers into your uterus, just your vagina. When she presses down on the belly she is feeling for uterine position and if there is anything abnormal around the overies. It won't be the last exam you have to go through,so just take some deep breaths and relax.Good luck!

it's not a finger in the uterus your uterus is above your cervix. It's a cervix check not a uterus check you can't get to the uterus unless the cervix is dialted they DO NOT dialte your cervix in pregnany!. Later in pregnancy more towards delivery the cervix opens. In early pregnany the cevix is tight and closed. a cervix check is never the most pleasent of things to have done.

It's normal! They have to check the uterus for a number of reasons. It doesn't pose any threat to the baby either. I know it's painful....just wait until your in labor with hard contractions and they check, it hurts about 50 times worse lol. Good Luck!
P.S. My doctor always told me to tell her if it was too painful...maybe let the doc know?

it is normal, the doctor would not do anything that hurt the baby, it is uncomfortable but, come on we have had bigger things in there, if not we couldn't get pregnant,LOL, the discomfort should go away in a day or less. if not go back to your doctor.
congrats on the baby.
