I was wondering if anybody had used a birthing doula and what they thought of the experience. Helpful? In the way? Do most hospitals provide them, or do you find your own?

I am pretty sure you have to find your own. Our hospital did say wonderful things about them (during the birthing class) but it just was not worth the cost to us. The cheapest we could find was around a 1300 dollars for her services. Her plan included 4 1 hour at home visits (2 before and 2 after) and the delivery (up to 24 hours and pay more after that). It just was NOT worth it to me, especially since I had my husband and tons of family that wanted to be there too.

For my first, our hospital provided a doula for free. We just had to ask to be matched with one ahead of time. My hubby said it was the best decision we made. She helped me and she showed hubby ways he could help me. Very good to have a neutral third party who is on your side and knowledgeable about birth and coping techniques, procedures, etc.

Second birth was too quick for our doula to attend.

We had a friend who is a doula attend our third birth, which was at home. She was great. Could tell from across the room when/where I was holding tension and tell me to release it.

You have to find your own, I believe or your gyno can recommend one.
BUT make sure you check your insurance rider to see if they accept doulas...the majority of insurance companies won't cover it if you use a doula!
