I already tried snaking and plunging (repeatedly) with limited sucess. The water recedes, but VERY slowly. If I flush it goes right back up to the top again.

Any suggestions? We do have another toilet, so this isn't an emergency, but I'd rather not pay for a plumber if I can help it.

Keep doing what your doing it sounds like something is really stuck n not what normally clogs your toilet is probably not whats clogging yours .If you have kids young ones then it could b a toy and you would have to take the toilet off in some cases to fix .You might want to get a longer snake.

Short of calling a plumber the next step is to unmount the toilet. you'll want to buy a wax ring from Home depot and get the thick ones or 2 thin ones to be safe. There usually isn't much holding it to the floor other than the 2 obvious screws. If the toilet has something stuck in the trap that shouldn't be there you;ll be able to get it out. If not then the problem is farther down in the plumbing and you'll need a plumber. To replace the toilet remove the old wax ring and drop in the new one and then very carefully drop the toilet EXACTLY on top of it. and then screw it back down. It's pretty easy actually but you'll need some muscle power to lift and set the bowl. Any guy (or gal) who is handy can manage the whole job in 45 min.

If you have kids use your hand and reach as far in as you can...better yet have the kids do it. Sounds nasty but isn't IF you wash well afterward. My bet is what another suggests....hairbrush, comb, teddy bear.....You'll be plunging a long time and moving the obstecle even further down and NEVER away.....Any thing which belongs in the toliet would have been unplugged by what you alredy have done.
NEXT take up the toilet...
OR hire the plumber to do what I just said and pay $60-$100 for the call and service and a bit more at outrageous rates if HE has to take up the unit.

Stuff happens!

Do you have kids ? Bet there is a toy stuck in the trap of the toilet. You not gonna like this but you may have to put your hand into the toilet and feel along the drain hole to see whats obstructing it. (Wear long rubber gloves) If you can't get to it that way then unbolt your tank from the back of the toilet after draining the water and remove your water line that refills the toilet tank, then undo the two bolts from the floor at the base of your toilet. Be sure you turned off the water first. Hopefully whatever is obstructing waste flow will be there either in back of toilet underneath or in waste pipe. To reassemble, make sure you pick up a ''bee's wax seal'' from your local hardware store (a must), rubber seals to re-bolt your tank back on base and two new ''brass'' bolts to re-bolt base to floor in case they are worn or broke when you removed them.

ADDED INFO (Nov 17,2006 at 11:00 am Ont. time) : Check your toilet for lime scale, if it has a heavy buildup of lime in trap and bowl, you may want to replace it with a new toilet bowl....

What I do is first I pour down a little dish washing detergant , and flush a few times, if that does not open it then it is time for a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar on top of it. Once al the fizzing has stoped flush again, this may be repeated. If you have any children,is there a possibility that some toy may be downed in there,

Pour a load of washing-up liquid or bleach into the toilet, then instead of flushing..... get a bucket or a watering can, and pour HOT water down the toilet..... try flushing again after pouring it down about 3 times....... repeat process if didn't quite work.

OK try to get a device for plugged drains known as a snake. If you know someone who has one or sometimes Lowe's, home deport sometimes rents them. ALl you have to do is run it thru your toilet and if it is something big it will come out with the snake but if it's toilet paper it will cut it up. SO try that. or just get a plumper to go snake it.

We had the same problem before we remodeled our bathroom. The plumbing under the house was not slanted down enough for the water to leave the toilet properly. If you or your husband are handy you could replace the pipe and reset the toilet.

go away it and don't flush it until the water point drops backtrack to its regularly occurring place. it ought to take an hour or so even with the indisputable fact that it is going to drop finally. Pouring extra water in won't help. in simple terms play the waiting interest, whilst it drops suited down, supply yet another flush and with a bit of luck, which will sparkling the tissue from the U-bend. If no longer, in simple terms wait returned and repeat. attempt to evade sticking extra gadgets down there which incorporate coat hangers, you ought to by threat get it caught on between the rubber seals on the waste pipe and reason a leak and that i do no longer think of you prefer to be putting your hand in there to manually unblock it yet once you do, attempt putting a plastic binliner over your arm and tie the actual with an elastic band to create a protracted water-resistant 'gauntlet' and in simple terms get your hand down there to work out in case you are able to dislodge any blockage. Then discard the bag.

I am sorry but I suggest you leave the job to the drain specialist to check the drains, not just the toilet. If the drains are clear please consider a new toilet with bigger drain capacity; we did and the problems ended. (See Terry Love's Consumers toilet reports--terrylove.com/crtoilet.htm) Good Flush!
