King, Emperor, Shah, Sultan, and Tsar are all names of the rulers of different areas of the world. It has to do with the language but not the job.

A King rules in 1 kingdom and possibly other non royal or imperial states & mainly in European nations, whereas a sultan is mainly from Islamic & Arab traditions and is both a ruler of a Sultanate and a defender of the faith
"The title carries moral weight and religious authority, as the ruler's role was defined in the Qur'an. The Sultan however was not a religious teacher himself."

I believe a king is more equated with European culture while a Sultan is that of Arabic cultures. Just like an emperor is the Divine leader of East Asian countries. As to power, they are a head and supreme leader, so it would be the same, given if there is a democratically elected government or parliament that shares powers.

Technically, a Sultan is the ruler of a Sultanate - like H.M. Sultan Qaboos of the Sultanate of Oman. A King is the ruler of a Kingdom, like H.M. King Abdullah of the dominion of Saudi Arabia and a Sheikh is the ruler of a Sheikhdom like H.H. Sheikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. the variation is extra good to specify. many times a King is larger than something. yet an H.M. (ie Sultan) is comparable to the King's identify. So i assume Kings and Sultans are equivalent, a Sheikh is decrease in rank.
