Pro:
In a single-sex class, students aren't trying to impress member of the opposite sex, so they can focus more on learning instead of trying to look cool.

Con:
In the "real world" people have to work with the opposite gender all the time, so they should get that practice when they are in school.

Personally, I think same-sex classes are a great idea in middle school and high school, when kids are teenagers and showing off for your peers becomes more important than being smart and learning. And many studies have been done showing that single-sex education works - kids learn better. Perhaps not every class needs to be single-sex.

Some studies show that girls are more confident when they study in same sex classes because boys tend to speak up more in general. Also, a lot of girls don't want to appear too smart in class because they think it will make them less attractive to boys. In general, mixed classes provide more distractions related to trying to impress the other sex. There are also studies that show boys do better in school if they are allowed to move around more frequently, go outside, learn in a physically active way. Some schools are experimenting with learning for boys where they walk around or act out scenarios while they are learning something and this suits the boys' more "kinesthetic" learning style. Another book came out that showed boys are turned off by reading because a lot of books used in classrooms are more oriented towards female interests. I am not sure I believe this, but at least in the special schools for boys they have a lot of books about war and football and other stereotypical "boy" subjects.

On the con side is the fact that you are not preparing kids for real life where they will have to get along with and work with people of both genders. Also, some women fear that "separate but equal" schools for boys and girls will give more resources and up-to-date materials to the "boy" schools and that some of the same sex school advocates also want to indoctrinate children about traditional roles for boys and girls. I.e., they don't just want to teach girls and boys with books about different subjects (i.e., "war" and "football" vs. "kittens" and "helping friends"), but they want to tell girls that a woman's place is in the home and she ought to learn how to cook and clean and take care of babies and teach boys that they are the ones who rule the world and take home the bacon. I am not sure to what extent these fears are founded.
