Julie, that answer depends. First, is the family of 4 Ghanaian to begin with, or are they expats say from the US who are in Ghana?

If they are locals, then, believe it or not, they can exist on about $40 a month. Local foods are relatively inexpensive. For example, porridge or waakye (beans and rice) for breakfast about 15 - 25 cents (USD), lunch might be kenkey and fish for about 25 cents or fried yam with shitor for about 10 cents, dinner could be fufu and light soup or banku and okro stew, about 50 cents. Because Ghanaians don't eat individual portions, one huge bowl is doled out and shared among the family.

On the other hand, an expat family would maybe only eat local foods once in a while. My family of 5 (including 1 Ghanaian husband) spends probably about $7-8 a day on foods, both local and "continental" style, meaning eggs and potatoes, tuna fish, pasta, rice, chicken or meat, etc.

Hope this helps.
