Chuck "The Rifleman" Connors is correct.
Darryl Dawkins actually broke TWO backboards in the 79-80 season. One shattered the whole board (the late Bill Robinzine was the Spurs player that was under the backboard at the time, and he cleared out of there as fast as he could)... the second dunk basically snapped the rim off of the backboard, but the board didn't completely shatter as it did the first time.

Just to add to the comprehensive answer of the last respondent, the game wherein Chuck Conners shattered the backboard (this happened during warm ups, can you believe it?) took over an hour to start as they had to change the backboard.

The first player I know of that shattered a backboard was Darryl Dawkins. He destroyed the first backboard in 1979. He continued to do so until he retired. The link below talks of his most memorable times dunking and destroying the backboard.
