the Amish have struggled to maintain their beliefs and traditions, often in hostile settings. They have overcome many challenges in three centuries. How have they remained distinctive? How have they changed?

The Amish have remain largely distinct by their dress and strict adherence to tradition, faith, family and their communities. They have changed in a number of ways, with some sects breaking away from the more formal and rigid customs of the past, allowing more liberal use of technologies like battery-powered appliances, farming equipment and telephones (although they are still in large prohibited from having phones in their homes). The communities vary from one district to another, so it's impossible to say how much the "Amish" as a whole have changed. Some very little, others much more.

With less land available for farming, some Amish have moved from strictly agricultural and carpentry-based work to other types of jobs in factories and the service sector where it has been necessary. That's probably the biggest change you could apply as blanket to the Amish.

They isolate them selves from the secular world in their own little 'villiage' I guess you could call it, but I think of it more like a bubble. However I would NOT say it's(usually) hostile environment and the Amish are very nice helping people they just value family and life more then people 'out in the world'.

Just wait until Rush and O'Reilly says that it is O.K. to hunt Amish. 99% of the stupid conservatives will go hunting
