Yes - it can happen that you get a foreign objects into your lung this way. And - this is also not good news because it is difficult for the lung to get rid of it and the tissue around the object can get inflamed and so on. It depends then probably on what kind of pill you swallowed, whether the substances are all well water soluble or not and whether they could have any other irritating effects and so on.

And therefore - if you had that happen and you feel there is the pill in your lung then I guess you need to go to a doc who needs to take some images to confirm this and then recommends a way to get this out.

Generally speaking the epiglottis seals the glottic opening when a swallow is initiated. It is uncommon to aspirate something as large as a pill when there is no disease process which inhibits swallowing. That said, the likelyhood would increase if there was a problem with swallowing from a stroke or structural defect. Either way, there would be some shortness of breath and fever afterwards. Actually the water does not progress down the trachea with what you have described. The choking sensation and coughing are a protective mechanism caused by laryngospams.

It can happen with food particals. When foreign objects go "down the wrong way" it often leads to a particularly bad case of pneumonia - it happened to my physics teacher. popcorn got him, i'm afraid. don't worry, he recovered in time for the mid-term...of course.
