Omg I just wrote a paper on it! Copy n' paste...

The waxing crescent moon comes after the new moon. It is when we see a crescent of light on the right side of the moon. This phase continues until the first quarter moon, when the terminator (the line between the dark and light hemispheres of the moon) divides the visible face of the moon into halves, and the right side of the moon’s face is visible from the earth.
The waxing gibbous moon is when more than half of the right side of the moon’s face is visible. This phase continues until the full moon. After the full moon, the terminator comes into view on the right side of the moon’s face, the reverse of what the waxing crescent looked like. This is called the waning gibbous. This phase goes on until the third quarter moon. During the third quarter moon, the terminator is again dividing the moon into halves, but this time the left side is lighted.
Next, the terminator continues moving left and the left side of the moon becomes a crescent. This is called the waning crescent. The terminator continues moving left until it is a new moon again.

Hope I helped!

The Moon has phases; new, crescent, half, gibbous, and full. The gibbous phases take place between full and halves, when it's about three-quarters full. Those phases after a new moon and a before a full moon are called waxing, another word for growing. For example, waxing crescent or waxing gibbous. The phases after full moon and before the next new moon are called waning, another word for shrinking. For example, waning gibbous or waning crescent.

Waxing means growing more toward the full moon as the month progresses; waning means growing from the full (completely round) to an ever "thinner" moon to gibbous to crescent to new moon (meaning no moon showing at all).
