Nothing like waiting until the last minute and then asking complete strangers to write your homework for you. The chutzpah is overwhelming.

This is a tough question. Do you mean one person in the family has a diasability, or the whole family is dysfunctional? A disability that was from birth or was the result of an accident (ie cerebal palsey VS arm blown off in war)? I guess the only thing I can say is I would ask a family what I could do to help them. When I was on bedrest, my neighbor would come over and wash dishes or bring over dinner for me. I think the kindest things we can do for each other are through our gestures!

Lorena, I am in a family with a member who is physically and mentally disabled. I am the only person who fights for his needs. So first hand, the best thing you can do for a disabled person is advocate and volunteer. There are so many people with disabilities without healthcare or even worse, anyone to take care of them. There is little federal funding and in most states the state funding is non-existent. Those who do have families who take care of them despirately need respite care. Its expensive and without volunteers they get no relief.

If you need specifics, look into what programs your state does or does not have. A good place to look into programs for disabled people is the Easter Seals website.

I hope this helps you.

The best thing to do is let them know you are there for them should they need you. People with disabilities are often offended when they are "helped" without them asking.
