Ph.D. is the highest degree.
I think your concept of the purpose of a Ph.D. is a little skewed. A Ph.D. is not attained to have a market edge over everyone else. It is also not to have certified superiority over everyone else. It is to become more literate in your field.
Any credentials beyond a Ph.D. are demonstrated by your own original work. There is only so long you can go to school before you need to start making up your own mind about things. That is the point of a Ph.D. program. It helps you become disciplined in your field to be proficient in the useful information in your specialty. Then you should be able to create original non-trivial additions to that field. Most People do not get Ph.D.s for the money.
There is, however, Post Doc work but that is just additional support to help the Ph.D. begin building his/her resume and create original work. There is no degree awared for this work.
If fewer people know what you know does it make it less important? I think not.
I for one think intellectual superiority is proven by merit not going to more classes and passing more tests.

Nope, there's nothing higher than that. And really, after a while more schooling is pointless - get out into the real world! After a certain point, no one can teach you anything more, at least nothing more than what you could find out on your own. So no, I don't think there should be anything beyond a PhD.
