Ok, here is my two cents on the subject.....
It depends on how responsible your daughter is. Ipods are not cheap, but MP3 players are. They both serve the same function, play music. A decent MP3 player will run about half of that of an Ipod.
MP3 players are easier to manipulate the files. Generally, you drag and drop the music files to unit and away your go. This can occur from any PC with anyone.
Ipods are restrictive. The music files are only good from ITunes. If you ever lose your ITunes program, you lose your music. ITunes is need to drag and drop files to and from the Ipod.

An iPod is an MP3 player. It is more sophisticated than some other players mainly because it holds more songs. If she wants an MP3 player that can hold many songs and will last a while, you should buy her the Creative Zen Microphoto mainly because it has a replaceable, rechargeable battery. The iPods battery has been found to die after only one year of use. You can order and buy separate batteries for the Microphoto so you can keep using it. If she wants a 60GB version of the iPod, get her the Creative M, because like the Microphoto, you can change the battery. Sound quality is Creative's specialty, so you will get clean, clear music. The Creative players are a lot more reliable than the iPods that are so popular. One added bonus: The Microphoto costs as much as a iPod Nano, but holds six times the songs.

Ipods are better than MP3 but MP3 are just as good! she doesn't need an ipod they cost way to much and the mp3 pretty much does the same thing except doesn't play video. No 13 year old i know needs or deserves an ipod i didn't get my first one until i was 24(lol) It cost way to much, and kids at that age just aren't responsible enough to have something at such value, Because if you do get her an ipod you have to get her the one with 80 GB because the 30 GB doesn't do anything more than a MP3 does. Good luck with that but like i said she's way to young wait until maybe she's 16 by then they would have come out with something better and if she want one bad enough she can get a job!

Ipods are MP3 players. They are a specific type, made by Apple. There's a reason why they have captured 70% of the mp3 player market... they are by far the coolest. And being the coolest is far more important to a 13 year old than the slight differences in specific capabilities and prices of units made by other fine companies such as 'creative'.
Get her an ipod nano. Probably the coolest consumer product every made (to date). The only thing you need to ask her is what color she wants.

An Ipod IS an MP3 Player.
Ipod is the brand.
The Ipod is fine for a teenager. So are any of the others like the Creative Zen, Cowon's iAUDIO, iriver's iclix, etc.

You get much more media use from an IPOD, but they tend to get a little pricey as she is going to want the one with video I'm sure. I have just a standard MP3 player for just music and I love it...if that is all she wants it for...then just get the mp3 player (at least 1gb though)

an ipod is an mp3 player. regardless, ipod is a reliable product and user friendly like most mac products. they are easily customizable with silicon skins, so your daughter can choose her favorite color and make her ipod unique for all of two dollars. plus, since she is so young, you can get her the ipod shuffle which is relatively cheap (under $100) but still stylish and cool (being about the size of a gum pack).

I think you should get her an Ipod because even though normal MP3's are cheaper, Ipods have more cases so it won't get scrachted and they are more popular. My advice: She will probably like an Ipod better. Try EBay and you can get them pretty cheap.
