The guys that are on drugs are not always high. Sure, they may have drug problems but not every song they write was on high. I think drugs simply made the Beatles grow up. The realised that songs about wanting to hold your hand or teenage love were just not up to standard. It's the guys that come back later, when they have kicked the drug habit, and write great music that are the true geniouses. Here's my top 5 songwriters, and they have proved over the years that they can write great songs regardless.
1. Bob Dylan
2. Neil Young
3. Bruce Springsteen
4. Paul Simon
5. Leonard Cohen
Ok, so with the exception of Cohen, the others have all written brilliant material whilst not high. So i guess that answers your question.

Whilst not condoning the use of drugs, it/they(drugs, more commonly cannabis and L.S.D.), most certainly DO open doors in the mind that would normally be closed.
Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, is up to the individual to decide.
The Beatles were most certainly better songwriters after dabbling with 'soft' drugs.
...But, on the same level. It/they(drugs) are most certainly guilty of wiping out a good proportion of 'our' better musos.
Just my thoughts.

i don't think it is so much that drugs make you write better. I think drugs make it easier to write what you want and not care what people think. if you were really concerned with what people thought... wouldn't you more than likely not be a crackhead, or a needle poker? I find writing while annebriated is easy and I can understand it perfectly. when I come back to it sober i find it very bizarre and wonder to myself "what the hell was I thinking!". so maybe i should just be high all the time :) and yes. great analogy. juicyfruit and lobster.

Indeed, musicians do tend to write better music high (i.e. Beatles, Donovan, Hendrix, Doors), but some musicians (i.e. Red Hot Chili Peppers) write AMAZING songs and don't seem to be high.

Yeah, and Areosmith will kick your *ss for saying that.
It's irresponsible to publicly condone drug usage with delusions of grandeur.
The artists you mention were great IN SPITE of a drug habit not BECAUSE OF. They were taken too early from us and drugs were the cause.
Your statement demeans their memory, their work, and the value of human life.

"better" is subjective, not concrete.
many people will tell you that justim timberlake is "better" than nirvana.
perhaps you merely have more in common with drug users, and can better relate to their music.
