1.) It effectively ended the French Wars of Religion, and brought France much-needed stability, allowing it's economy to expand and its influence on the continent to grow.

2.) It showed that a major European nation could thrive while upholding the ideals of religious tolerance.

The edict only lasted 89 years, however, when Louis XIV repealed it.
