if the roots have gone into the pointing-- its best to leave it to die back and leave the roots embedded in the mortar alone- unless you want to get the wall re- pointed.
if its just the little 'hairy' roots on the surface of the mortar they will brush off easily if you leave it for a while, say 2-3 months in the summer.- when people try to remove ivy roots when there still green they tend to damage the pointing(or even bricks if old).this can look unsightly and cause problems a few years on with water getting into the wall.

Cut at the base, then kill roots with weedkiller. Let the ivy die naturally.
If you try to pull it off the wall all the cement will come out with it leaving you a expensive mess to sort out.

Hi I use a Dutch Hoe does two things really first the ivy flys off and secondly the wall sharpens the hoe try it you won't be disappointed.

It is best NOT to pull the ivy from the wall because this can ruin it- it can destroy the mortar. Instead you could use a herbicide to kill the whole plant.

I have a similar problem and found that the only effective way is to pick them off with screw driver/fingers etc.

Best to wear gloves.

having cut ,paint roots with a mixture of gas oil(diesel) and grazon 90(brushwood),50/50. very little will do
