You are smelling the hose. Once the polymers heat up from the exhaust, they shed atoms and these are carried along to you with the carbon monoxide. If you want to see pretty colors along with the stars, dump an economy sized package of mothballs into your tank.

You CAN'T smell carbon monoxide. You'll just start feeling sick and if you don't get treatment in time, you'll die.
