You realize you said service vehicle? You did mean this instead of service engine? A couple of things comes to mind. Sometimes the wheel sensors will collect enough brake dust to stop the sensors from getting a reading. Brake dust contains metal as do your brakes themselvs. These can clog up and once you clean the dust that has packed up in them, they will return to normal orpeation. Another thing could be a leaking gas cap. Your fuel system is preasurized, and the fumes from the fuel tank is burned and/or filtered through a charcoal filter. Sometimes the person putting fuel into the tank will keep putting fuel into the tank even after the thing clicks off. This should never be done, as it will force gas up into the charcoal filter, and cause it to malfunction. Never put more fuel into the tank after the pump clicks off! The gas cap has a sealing ring on it that keeps the tank under pressure, and if this ring goes bad, it will cause a light to come on. Low windshield washer fluid can cause a light to come on. The coolant level down too low can do this. The transmission being to low on fluid can do this. The power steering fluid being to low could cause this.
If all else fails, take it to the dealer, and have them tell you what is wrong with it. They can get codes that the average mechanic cannot. Call the service manager and ask him what the charge is to tell you what is wrong with it. They will do that for a fee. You can fix it yourself, but you are at their mercy on some things, and this may be one of them.
I hope I have been able to help you. Good Luck!!!

I have a 2000 pontiac and the service light comes on when I need to change the oil. My dad changes the oil and the light is still on so he just programs it again. The way to do it should be in your manual. If any other light comes on I take it to my mechanic. You should do the same since it can lead to something more serious. Good luck.

Service engine light comes on when ur car reaches a certain predetermined mileage. The cars computer clicks it on.

In the gp is there just 1 light or 2 service and check engine light?

The computer getting a 'out of range' signal from one or more sensors will cause the check engine light to come on. Any decent mechanic can read the codes and tell you what the problem is. Please don't follow the advice someone is bound to give about disconnecting your battery to clear the trouble codes. All that will do is make it harder to find the problem.

probably not tightening the gas cover all the way. I know it sounds strange, but I have a Pontiac and it happens to me. my dad runs a service shop and I have to take it in to get the service light turned off.

Could be anything, as the computer is linked to many different parts. Take the car to an auto parts store (Like Advance Auto) and they can hook up a computer to your car and tell you what is wrong.

Mine came on right after I bought it because when I filled it up with gas the first time, I did not thread the gas cap correctly. After about a week to ten days, and after I tightened up the gas cap, it when off on it's own.
