When I was in the 6th grade my class went on a school trip where we stayed in cabins and had a great time. If I remember correctly, it was around a 3 days trip. As long as there's plenty of teachers and supervision, I think this is a fine age.

Most of it depends on the child, and how well the listen and behave. I have a 9 year old daughter that I know would do well on a 30 day European holiday. I've also know some 17 & 18 year olds, that I wouldn't leave alone in my house for more than 5 minutes. The next question would be about the shapperones. How well do you know them and how responsible are they? Whats the adult to child ratio?
Is he going with good friends, somebody he's know for a year of more? If you can answer these questions in a positive manner, than it is probably okay for him to go. Even he goes outside naked he will most likely only get a cold.

He will be fine, I'm sure as long as it is run probably by good responsible adults, don't worry. And if it doesn't work out, well maybe leave it until he is a little older. My ten year old went away for a week with his school. Had a great time, he came back filthy and his clothes he had hardly changed. ( much to my disgrace ) but he had had a brilliant time and it was great for his confidence and social skills.

I think 11 is a good age to let them go check into it and make sure there a plenty of adults around. Most sixth graders in my town get to go to a ski resort 3 hrs away during winter break we are letting my 11 yr old stepdaughter go if she wants to.

I went on a weeklong trip to Washington, DC (I live in AL) when I was in 8th Grade. It snowed the whole time.

I went on overnight school trip a year earlier.

Of course, what crazy teacher wants to go on an extended school trip with kids that are too young?

I never went on an overnight field trip until I was in 8th grade. Even then it was only two days and only about 3 1/2 hours from my hometown.

if its a school event they should have a minimum age limit, if it is a field trip for his age group or no age limitations he should be old enough no matter the length or distance, the school has to carefully plan things like that around the fact there will be younger kids, shcools are very careful, trust them. tell a chapperone your concerns and let them take care of it.

i went on a winter retreat when i was 10... i was kinda lonely. it depends on your kid, you said he doesn't dress warm enough? if it'll be really cold out, like negative degrees, then maybe you could ask a teacher or someone else to make sure that he dresses warm enough, you don't want him getting frostbitten. make sure that he actually BRINGS the warm clothes in the first place.
