Why do you care what people think? You are just looking for attention. People are going to say you're a lazy drop out & all sorts, why are you looking for that bad attention?

It would be interesting to know why you left that many jobs. Obviously you don't have trouble finding jobs, but you seem to have difficulty keeping them. You say you are well known and liked, have excelled at many jobs and advanced in them -- but the bottom line is you have had approx. 4 jobs per year in your working career. That means you stay at a job on average for three months. Hard to understand how you could excell or advance very much in three months.
Now you are broke and your wife and son have to stay at a women's shelter.
My friend, it sounds as though you need a reality check.
Forget about looking for a 'calling'. That's a bunch of bologna. The only people who are 'called' are those who enter the church. And that seems to be one option you haven't explored yet. And likely won't because it means going to theological college and you are hardly in a position to tackle that.
My advice? Get a job and stay with it. It's the sure way to prevent starvation and homelessness. It's the only way to ensure any sort of future for your family.

The underlying question here is, why does your calling change?
I would suggest that yuo are someone who is quite easily bored, probably because you have a low attention span, and probably because you are quite intelligent, and imaginative.
Because you are quite easily bored the sort of jobs you are qualified for quickly become tedious. Athough being aaSous chef is a respectable position, it is not especially intellectually, or creatively taxing.
Also, because you are easily bored, you have not sat down and completed the qualifications, or stayed in organisations/businesses long enough to rise in them to more responsible or interesting positions. It also means that your income remains entry level.
So what can you do about all this?
The options are 1. study 2. stay with the same organisation and work your way up 3. go part-time and try to do something imaginative with the rest of your time.
IM me if you like. I was a bit like you for quite a while, but I managed to find my centre.

Get off your butt and get a decent education you lazy bum... You don't drag you kid and and old lady down with you... Hate to be mean but you should have thought about the future back in ninth grade. I don't know what your situation was back than or what state you live in but beg borrow or steal for your family. Get Your GED and become a correctional officer... they pay well. If you have a record though I don't know what to tell you. Good luck. It's dangerous in those shelter's. You son and wife or girlfriend needs you right now so hop to it. Sorry to sound mean but it's us mean people that help give other people the drive. Hope I have done that for you.

The question is, why have you had so many jobs? Are you easily bored, do you quit, do you get fired? You'll have to analyze this yourself. But even in today's economy where it's not unusually for someone to have several jobs over his lifetime, stability is something employers look for, and having over 40 jobs and homes is excessive for anybody. What ever this job is your starting you need to stay there for at least a couple of years. ( for anyone else I would say at least 4 years but for you a year would be a great improvement.)
You need to find out what the underlying problem is (and there is one whether you will admit it or not), and seek help for it.

Sounds to me like you lack goals.
Figure out what would make you comfortable and happy, and pursue it.
If you have to live in a shelter, and go back to school, do it.
You can take courses to set you on the path to your dream.
Find out what student loans are available. But just use the shelter for sleep. Hanging out there causes depression, something that will definitely inhibit your motivation.
I am in a similar situation. But currently I can't leave my job or I won't have anywhere to live. I'm planning on attending some courses this spring, to get my life together as well.
There are many reasons for us to have left school, but there is no reason we can't finish it now. If we are to have a happy future, we have to work hard now. We can do it! Have faith, and remember who you're doing it for - YOU! You will feel better, and can provide for your family. Good Luck!

My personal opinion is....stop listening to your calling....get a job under your belt and keep it there. I went through this with my fiance. Job after job...irritating as hell trying to make ends meet on a puny little job. He gave me the sob story...this isn't what i want to do, i'm worth more than this. Well, anything is better than nothing. And maybe you're not completely happy with what you're doing right now, but stick it out...continue putting your resumes into what you really want to do but keep a job while you do it. Life will be so much easier. Your calling will find you. My man now works for a well to do auto body place just like he wanted...but he stayed at a factory he despised up til he got that job.

Having 40 jobs on your resume is a red flag to potential employers. They may fear a lack of commitment or competency with the responsibilities of the position. Use your manager experience to apply for a regular job, stick with it for at least a year, and move up within the company.

If you excelled and advanced, why are you no longer at those jobs ? Why don't you keep a job if it is good ?
If you want a better job, it is OK to go to interviews but you never quit a job until the other one comes through.
40 jobs is too many to leave, If you have a child, you owe it to them to stick with a job to provide shelter & food. You cannot keep quitting jobs, you need to grow up and stick with them much longer, because you created a child, you owe it to him to NOT be so fickle.

You need to quit looking for your "calling" and concentrate on providing for your family in any honest way you can. I don't know many people who actually enjoy their job. Working for a living is a fact of life and it seems like you can be a good worker. From now on, the only reason you should leave a job is to get one that pays more. Your wife and child are your "calling".
