A thesis statement is the central idea or point of your writing. ( In a paragraph it is called a topic sentence) A good thesis sets up your belief and under what conditions or restrictions. In a research paper a thesis is arguable and/or researchable. For example if you were writing about cars a good thesis would be "Hybrid Cars are necessary to help Americans stop being dependent on foreign oil. The American Government needs to encourage development and use of hybrid vehicles via research grants for manufacturers and tax rebates for consumers. This thesis statement would drive and organize the rest of your paper.
