Why would people a civilized society consider guns as a right? To defend oneself? Isn't that why we have a law and order agencies for? If one has to defend oneself why do we pay taxes for a police force?

If people of a country have to defend themselves against their own government, I think they deserve their government!

In the same vein, should we allow Iran to produce Nuclear weapons? They have a right to defend themselves against other countries, right?

Blue Steele
About Iran,
So you say. Iranians might have to say otherwise.
This argument could be applied to anyone buying a gun too. Some person could say that you want to buy a gun to shoot him/her

The law and order agencies are there to try to locate and arrest a person after they have committed a crime, not to be the personal bodyguard of every person in the country. It is up to the private citizen to protect himself. Firearms are used for many other things besides protecting ones self from harm. Things like competition, plinking (informal shooting fun at tin cans and the like), and hunting. The right to bear arms is the most important right, for without it, all the other rights could be taken away.

Sir; the right to own guns is a Constitutional Right, it is the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. There are and will be many, many arguments about what the Second Amendment really means. But as you research this for yourself to come to your own conclusion, remember that the first 10 amendments to the Constitution were about the people rights, not the right of the government. "We the People....."

The Second Amendment is a right of the people just as the First is the right of the people. The right to free speech. The free speech right that gives you and many more the right to go to Yahoo! Answer and let your voice be heard. Just look at what China has done to censor their Internet, no free speech.

Your question of "why would people of a civilized society consider guns as a right" Maybe this is why some societies are civilized because the people have the right to protect themselves. Just look at the countries in Africa and other places where people do not have a means to defend themselves. They are physically, sexually abused and even murdered - by who? By the law and order agencies that are supposed to protect them. In the United States the Supreme Court of our land has ruled that law enforcement agencies have no duties or obligation to protect those that they serve.

In closing Sir, I would like you to remember that a gun is just a piece of metal. It's the person handling it that uses it for good or bad. Let me ask you, when a person get's killed by a car do you and the people in our country blame the car (a piece of metal) or the driver. I bet you and many more will say the driver.

Good luck with your research and I hope you find the right answer. Oh, last thing - if there was a gun in you home and someone broke in and started raping and killing your son, daughter and wife would you say "please stop until I call the Police" or would you go get your gun?

It is a Constitutional right to own guns. There are too many crazy people out there that can get guns, legally or illegally, so I am going to have mine to protect myself from them and from dangerous animals. Can the police and law and order agencies be around constantly? No, so I am not taking any chances.

I also enjoy just target shooting for fun to release stress and to become a better shot, in case I ever do need to shoot something in self defense.

Oh Snap...to eddie's response about Hitler!

I need my machine gun for hunting, plus it's my right! Seriously though, law enforcement cannot be everywhere all the time. Iam alot safer in my house with a revolver then without one. I have children to protect. In a split second that Ruger might save any one of my family's lives to the point that no law enforcement individual could possibly do. And no my children do not play with firearms. They are very well taught that they are not toys. In fact my youngest son who is seven is going to get his first single shot 12 guage for Christmas this year! The same age I was when I got my first shotgun.

The Second Amendment was not written as some people think for defense against our government. Thomas Jefferson was against a standing army. He wanted to have a militia, where everyone owned a gun. In case of war the every gun owner would become the army. And I am for gun control....if you can't control your gun and hit your target, you don't deserve to have a gun.

We consider the right to keep and bear arms an essential part of staying a civilized society.
We pay law & order agencies to keep the peace and investigate crimes. We don't have enough police officers to be everywhere all the time.
If a bad guy kicks down your door, even if you can get to the phone and call 9-1-1, do you really think you will be alive by the time the police get there? If you have a weapon to defend yourself, you might live through the experience.

- Iran doesn't want nukes to defend themselves, they want them to extort money and aid from the US, and to threaten and destroy Israel. -

iweather it's guns or religion or free speech, it is a constitutional right that we must protect, once you revoke a right where do you stop, we all have a choice to do something,or not to and the law must not impinge on a legal choice

Find a cop when you really need one .
If cops could do more than be a cleanup crew , we would not have any crime .

You can take my gun if you can pry my cold, dead fingers from it. LOL.....Unfortunately, the criminals have guns. We have to defend ourselves. YOu can take that to the bank and Wal-Mart.
