Why would people a civilized society consider guns as a right? To defend oneself? Isn't that why we have a law and order agencies for? If one has to defend oneself why do we pay taxes for a police force?

In the same vein, should we allow Iran to produce Nuclear weapons? They have a right to defend themselves against other countries, right?

A good and valid point. I believe or I understand that Right was granted or issued because of a fear of Government and Taxation and Use of Immanent Domain Laws, such as the British had done under King and Country or Imperial Law.
The right to bear arms was granted to Citizens in order to maintain a well regulated Citizen Militia. This Militia was to be the defenders of the ones that cannot or have not the ability to rebel or be secure in their property and papers by undoe, or unlawful searches and siezures by a private court within a court or a Standing Military.
Is a .22 Rifle a good defense or can it protect a Citizen from an attack of or by the Goverment. Look at Waco, no.
Are the Citizens safe in their homes and property from illegal Goverment Intrusion into Private Property? look at Ruby Ridge. no
The only people that are killed by handguns, or personal firearms, this is a DOJ statistic, are the owners of said firearms themselves.
Can a Citizen defend thier home, property and papers against an illegal action by the US Goverment or a Foreign or Domestic Enemy, no.
Why are gun rights so actively fought over, ask the company that makes and sells the guns with the blessing of the US Goverment as the taxes roll in.
Why do we have a police force? to enforce the 5789 bills that get offered in Congress every year to make new laws to ovveride the old laws that make new laws that superceed any existing law that predates the original drafting of the second draft of the third bill of the fifth law that nullified the existing law.
Sound confuseing? Well when I bought The US Constition and Laws book in 1972 it was 1679pages, today the same book is 6 volumes.
Laugh people, because your vote doesnt count. That is the law. And dont forget to oil that pistol that you are not allowed to carry or own in certain counties.

Why should we, as citizens, be "allowed" to own guns? For a couple of reasons:
1) The government was not created to tell me what I, as a law-abiding citizen, can and cannot have in my home. If I am following the laws and not murdering, robbing, raping, or otherwise harming someone, why should I NOT be "allowed" to have a gun?
2) The only thing that keeps the government of the US even remotely in-line is the scary premise that when they good and truly f*ck up, we, the armed citizenry, will take up those arms agains our government. Why else do you think that we still have all of our wonderful, inalienable rights?
3) Guns are not used solely for personal defense. Many people collect them, many enjoy shooting targets, and many like to hunt. And last time I checked, there wasn't a cop in every house at night to prevent against a break-in, or a cop following everyone around to be certain they are "safe".
4) Who would you rather trust with your life? Yourself or some stranger?
And, while I don't believe that Iran owning a couple of nukes is safe for anyone, I also don't believe that it is anyone's right to "allow" them to have nukes or not. When did we all start thinking that someone has to "allow" us to do anything????

There are times in your life when you will not have access to a police officer and you will be forced to defend yourself for your protection and your loved ones. Police are already out manned and out gunned, and they do the best they can to "protect and serve". That is why you have to "right to bear arms", and I also believe you have the "right to arm bears", with all the high powered weapons to kill those great creatures (unless one is trying to kill you). But hunting is another topic. By the way, we could live in a better civilized society, but due to the growing number of dirtbags, we need all the help from the police and for honest law biding citizens to protect themselves, even if deadly force has to be used.

When the thugs break down your door, you can call the police and they will come. However, by the time they get there 20 min later, your wife will have already been raped, and your head cracked wide open.
We don't want Iran with Nukes because they are crazy phuckers who have pledged to wipe out Israel and who support the idea of peopole loading themselves up with explosives and blowing the sh!t out of everyone.
The countries who have nukes understand that using a nuke is signing a death warrant for the country. Countries that would rathter die than to allow others to live can't be trusted with them.

Guns should be used for killing dangerous or delicious animals and for keeping the king of England out of your face.

We've hamstrung our police with political correctness. Maybe we should have done that with the criminal element before it got out of hand.
