At the end of the first movie Gilbert gives up teaching at the Avonlea school so Anne can teach there and stay with Marilla. He went to teach in another school (White Sands? Carmody?) and so had to live there. Eventually he moved away for medical school, and Anne moved away to teach at Kingsport Ladies College.

he left for Redmond college with Anne and charlie in the third book.
