The inter-quartile range - or IQR - provides the range of data that lies within the 25th percentile and the 75th percentile. The advantage of this over the full range (highest value - lowest value) is that it contains only the middle half of the data, with disregard to outliers (either abnormally high or low values).

As a result, extreme values within the distribution of the data are ignored. This means that the IQR will cover the range of data that are more typical for your distribution.
